Description

The Gate House is a timber-framed and plastered hall house located in Long Melford. Originally medieval, it underwent alterations and modifications in the 16th and 17th centuries, and was refronted in the 18th century when the central portion was built out to match the cross wings. A carriage entrance is situated at the south end, featuring exposed timber framing beneath the arch and a room above. This entrance displays arched braces and remnants of moulded shafts. The upper room of the north cross wing contains traces of wall paintings. The building also possesses a fine crown post roof. The front façade features a four-window range with 19th-century double-hung sash windows containing single vertical glazing bars. There are three 18th-century six-panel doors, each adorned with pilasters and cornice hoods supported by brackets. The roof is tiled with old tiles and is hipped over the cross wings.
