Description
The Gateway and Lodges to Melford Hall is a notable Elizabethan red brick structure, built around 1559, contemporaneously with Melford Hall and in a similar architectural style. The gateway features a four-centred moulded brick archway, topped with a stone panel that displays a carved coat of arms. Flanking the gateway are two Victorian gabled lodges that harmonize well with the original design. The gateway is adorned with octagonal towers that rise from large square bases, transitioning into octagonal shapes. These towers echo the design elements of Melford Hall and include leaded windows beneath ogee domed roofs, which are embellished with shell-decorated lunettes and later decorative wrought iron finials. The single-storey lodges on either side of the gateway have parapets and stopped gables, with leaded casement windows featuring moulded brick reveals and square hood moulds. Each lodge also has external chimney stacks, each with two octagonal shafts, and the roofs are tiled.
