Description
Wiston Mill is a notable 18th to 19th century timber-framed and weatherboarded watermill that is no longer operational and has been partly converted into a dwelling. The site has had a mill since the 16th century, with Tudor brickwork visible in the mill race beneath it. At the south end, remnants of a water wheel can be found. The structure features a gabled central section that rises three storeys with lofts, equipped with loft hoists on both the east and west ends, flanked by two-storeyed side wings. The building has a window arrangement of 1:2:1, with double-hung sashes that include glazing bars. The ground floor is constructed of brick.
At the north end, there is a 16th-century timber-framed and plastered house that extends east and west. This house was modified into cottages, likely in the 18th century, and was incorporated into the mill house in the 20th century. A short wing connects the 16th-century block to the mill. The windows in this section are 20th-century casements with leaded lights. Inside, the mill features exposed timber-framing ceiling beams and joists. The roofs of the mill are covered with slate, while the old house has tiled roofing. The mill is situated over a brick bridge, with the mill lade located on the east side. This brickwork includes 16th-century bricks from an earlier mill. The east front of the mill has a bridge paved with granite setts, and remnants of 19th-century mill machinery are still present inside.
