Description
Old Josselyns is a 16th-century house designed in an attenuated H-plan, with later additions to the north that align northeast to southwest. The building has a two-storey frontage featuring a long wall jetty supported on knees without pilasters. The east cross-wing continues this long jetty, while the west wing projects one bay forward and does not have a jetty. The west gable is jettied and displays a finely cut vine trail on the tie-beam, which is dated 1928. The roofs are ridged and gabled, covered with peg tiles. There is a recent red brick chimney stack located in the return of the west wing. To the east of the main house, there is a two-storey timber building with an exposed frame that is contiguous with the main structure, featuring wind braces that are stud to stud on the outer faces. The hall range is four bays long and includes modern copies of oriel windows. The south elevation has a correctly moulded design and two red brick chimney stacks at the southern end, along with a long flat-roofed extension that runs the full length of the house. Inside, there is a fine Macquetrie chimney piece that is tripartite. Additionally, there is an entire house on an L-plan, with two parallel stems at right angles to the main axis. This structure is of recent red brick and is attached to the northeast of Josselyns. It is two storeys high and features exposed reproduction timber framing on the first storey, which may incorporate old elements.
