Description
Gillingham War Memorial is situated at the northern end of Church Road and is made of grey granite. The memorial features a rough-hewn wheel-head cross atop a wide, tapering plinth with a single-stepped base. This is set on a concrete base surrounded by eight grey granite obelisk posts at the edges, which were once connected by chains. The plinth displays inscriptions in applied metal lettering.
On the front face of the plinth, the inscription reads "IN MEMORY OF" followed by 18 names. One side of the plinth notes the King's inspection, stating "ERECTED NEAR THE SPOT ON WHICH KING GEORGE V. STOOD TO REVIEW TROOPS OF THE NORTHERN ARMY JULY 26TH 1916." Another side continues with "HIS FAITHFUL SUBJECTS WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 1939 – 1945" followed by 2 names.
