Description

This is a former stable block, now used as school classrooms, dating from approximately 1750 and designed by Matthew Brettingham. The building is constructed of red brick with hipped slate roofs. It is arranged around a courtyard and comprises nine bays facing the south, with a further five bays on each side.

The south facade is symmetrical, with nine bays and a taller central archway leading to the courtyard. The arch is semicircular, featuring a rusticated surround and a key block. The tympanum, or space above the arch, is now infilled. Above the arch is a platband with a central, blind segmental window opening. The eaves are constructed with saw-tooth brickwork. The side wings each have four bays, with pilasters defining the bays. Twentieth-century two- and three-light casement windows have been inserted, set beneath flat lintels. A string course runs at parapet level, above which is a rebuilt parapet with ball finials positioned above the pilasters. The courtyard elevations contain some blind window openings.
