Description

Netherton House and the adjoining pair of cottages to the north have their origins in the late 17th century, featuring a 13th-century brick front and 19th-century additions. The buildings form a long brick range, with the main house having a brick front and the cottages finished in painted brick. They have a steeply pitched pantile roof with gable ends and rise to two storeys with an attic.

Netherton House has five windows, with three-light casements on the first floor and sashes with glazing bars on the ground floor. The entrance features a good doorway with fluted pilasters, an entablature with a fluted frieze and dentilled cornice, a rectangular fanlight with radial glazing bars, and a fielded panel door. There are also two gabled dormers.

The cottages have two windows with two-light casements and two doorways, one of which has a fielded panel door. Each cottage also features two gabled dormers. Originally, this part of Netherton House and the cottages formed a row of cottages, but in the 18th century, all but two were converted into one house. In the mid-19th century, a wing was added to the south end, constructed of grey brick with a slate hipped roof and bracketed eaves. This wing has two storeys and includes a two-storey canted bay with sashes, as well as a left-hand return with six windows (two of which are blind) that have sashes without glazing bars. The buildings also feature stuccoed chimney stacks with bracketed cornices and include mid-19th-century gate-piers to the south, with a brick wall flanking a panelled section. The interior of the original part contains stop-chamfered beams.
