Description
The Magpie Hotel and stables, located on the south side of Market Place in Harleston, date from the early 18th century, with the core likely being older. The building is constructed from plastered brick and features a hipped roof covered in black glazed pantiles. It stands two storeys high and has five windows, which are sashes with glazing bars set in moulded casings. Notably, the first-floor window to the right of the centre has a sash with thicker glazing bars. The ground floor includes sidelights next to the windows and two pilastered doorcases topped with entablatures, leading to fielded panel doors.
At the rear, there are two 18th-century painted brick wings, with the westernmost wing facing London Road and finished in stucco. This wing is also two storeys tall and has four windows, all sashes with glazing bars. Attached to the end of this wing is a 19th-century red brick addition, which is also two storeys high and features two sashes with glazing bars. An ornate wrought iron inn sign is located on the corner of the building. There is a carriageway on the east end of the front, with one sash window above that has thick glazing bars and a gable-ended roof. Adjacent to this is a long 18th-century stable range, which has a stuccoed wall facing Exchange Street, and on the south side facing the yard, there are loft and stable doors.
