Description

Gonville Hall is a house with a 16th-century fragment of a larger building, which was altered in 1966. It has a timber-framed core that is now mainly brick, with roofs made of pantiles and plaintiles. The east front features a two-storey range to the north, which includes a six-panelled door and a four-light 20th-century window to the right, located below another four-light 20th-century casement. Above the door, there is a three-light casement. The gabled roof is complemented by a 16th-century gable that projects to the south, rising three storeys. This gable has a three-light cross casement on each of the lower two storeys and a three-light 16th-century chamfered brick attic window above. The south return of this cross wing has a large stepped external stack that is gabled back to the main roof, along with three 20th-century windows and a door. An offset gabled two-storey range extends east from this, with brickwork that shows increasing antiquity towards the 16th-century east end. The front of this range is divided into three bays, featuring a central door and three-light casements on either side of each floor. The gabled roof has an internal gable-end stack to the east. The west gable is illuminated by a lower six-light chamfered brick mullioned window and a similar five-light attic window, with a 20th-century casement positioned between them. Inside, occasional jowled studs of the timber frame remain, and the 20th-century staircase reuses balusters. There are also occasional chamfered bridging beams.
