Description

Firgrove Cottage is a Lobby-Entrance type house, dating from the early 17th century with a later 17th-century side addition. It features an underbuilt timber frame with an applied imitation timber frame incorporated into the render, topped with a thatched roof. Originally, the cottage had a 5-bay frame that was extended by another 5 bays to the north. The building has two storeys with an attic and showcases six bays of 19th-century windows with glazing bars and rectangular hood-moulds. There is one small rectangular bay window, a canted bay window that serves as a porch, and a rectangular bay window that also functions as a porch. The gable ends have large bay windows. The cottage includes 19th-century casements with horizontal glazing bars and two dormers at the rear. It has two axial stacks and two winding staircases, one located on the entrance side of the southern stack. The structure features jowled wall-posts, ogee and nicked beam stops, and retains its original roof with collars and butt-purlins, which are made of heavier scantling in the southern half.
