Description

The Old Rectory is a 16th-century building located on Church Lane in Stratton St Michael. It features a timber-framed structure with a plastered ground floor and a steep pantile roof, which is even steeper at the west end and hipped. The building has two storeys, with a jettied first floor supported by curved brackets on carved wooden shafts. There are four widely spaced windows, mostly modern casements, along with two original wood mullion windows on the first floor—one with five lights and the other with four lights. The left side has an original moulded doorcase with a four-centred head and carved spandrels, leading to a modern reproduction "Tudor" door with cover moulds. A central brick chimney stack is present, and the rear walls are plastered. At the back, there is a wing that is also timber-framed and plastered, featuring a brick stack.

Inside, the property boasts heavily moulded ceiling beams, a first-floor panelled screen, and a staircase with a moulded string, shaped balusters, and a carved newel with a moulded handrail, dating from the late 16th century. The ground floor includes a fireplace with a heavily moulded timber bressumer.
