Description
This building is a cottage located north of Orchardleigh, dating from the 17th century with alterations made in the 18th to 20th centuries. It features a rendered timber-frame construction with a pantile roof and a brick chimney. The exterior is lined to imitate ashlar stone, and the south gable end is faced with brick. The cottage has a three-unit lobby-entry plan with an off-centre axial stack to the right. It is a single storey with an attic and has a three-window range of 20th-century two- and three-light casements. The entrance door is located to the right, opposite the stack, and there are two gabled dormers above.
Inside, the left service end partition remains, dividing the service rooms into two, although the studwork is not visible. There is a chamfered bridging beam in the hall, and the lobby opposite the door contains a winder stair in its original position. The parlour features three transverse chamfered bridging beams. The upper floor shows evidence of the timber-frame construction, with braced jowled corner posts and gable-end tie beams still in place. There are also signs of two former mullion windows, and the roof is likely a butt-purlin design from the 18th century. This cottage forms a group with Orchardleigh to the south.
