Description

The End House is a hall house dating from the early 16th century. It features a timber frame with a brick gable on the east side and colourwashed lath and plaster infill. The roof is covered with pantiles, which are black glazed on the north side. The building has two storeys, with the south side displaying a range of 20th-century glazed doors on the ground floor and four 20th-century windows on the first floor. The roof is gabled, and the south gable wall and short returns are constructed in Flemish bond brickwork. There is an internal stack at the south gable end.

Inside, the studs are exposed in the cross passage that leads to a blocked north door. Stairs have been inserted at the site of this north door. The interior features square bridging beams and joists, and the south end of the house retains a small open hall, which is of late date and lacks an elaborate roof. In the 17th century, the hall was reduced in size due to the insertion of a brick fireplace in the east wall of the south end.

On the first floor, there is a 4-light diamond mullioned window at the west end looking north, and a similar 5-light window further east. Both windows have grooves for sliding shutters. The roof structure includes tie beams, principals, and two tiers of purlins, with the lower tier butted and the upper clasped, along with cambered collars.
