Description

STOKE HOLY CROSS DUNSTON TG 20 SW 4/70 Dunston Hall 5/9/75 II Country house. Begun 1859 by J.C. Buckler and work taken over by Edward Boardman 1878. Brick with tiled roofs. Massive high Victorian Elizabethan style. North and south fronts of E plan and both similar. 3 storeys and attics. Main elevations in 5 bays, the end and centre bays project and are gabled. Central bay is narrower but projects further. Each projecting bay has octagonal corner turrets with tall ogeed finials of terracotta, as do the gable heads. The 2 recessed bays have narrow dormer gables treated in a similar manner. Fenestration of 2, 3, 4 and 6-light stone cross casements with leaded panes and hood moulds. Moulded string course at first floor. Gabled roofs and numerous chimney stacks with circular ornate terracotta flues. North front has in addition a central stone 4-centred doorway with moulded jambs and carved spandrels. Stables and stable yard connected to house by brick walls and lie to the north-east. Similar style and materials.
