Description

Wicklewood Hall is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century. It features a rendered and underbuilt timber frame that has been re-faced with brick on the ground floor front. An added colour-washed brick cross-wing and a two-storey porch enhance its architectural character. The original wing has four early 19th century tripartite sash windows with glazing bars, one of which has been replaced. The cross-wing contains two 19th century four-light mullion and transom casements in original openings, each topped with rectangular hood-moulds. The porch has one sash window and two blocked oculi, also beneath rectangular hood-moulds. The building is topped with steep-pitched roofs and crow-stepped gables on both the cross-wing and the porch.

An off-centre axial stack with four octagonal shafts is present on the original wing, while gable-end stacks with paired octagonal shafts are found on the cross-wing. Inside, there is a winding stair beside the stack in the original wing. The interior features very elaborate beam stops and a panelled room that is half 17th century and half 18th century. The 17th century oak panelling includes a carved lunette and an exceptional guilloche moulded frieze. Some sections of the panelling display different mouldings, indicating they have been re-used. The 18th century panelling is made of softwood and features large raised and fielded panels, dado rails, cornice mouldings, and a fine fire surround with a dentiled cornice, fluted triglyphs with guttae, and oval paterae. There is also a 20th century red brick fireplace.
