Description
The Grove is a 17th century timber-frame house that was encased in brick in the late 17th century. It features a steeply pitched tiled roof, two storeys, and an attic, with gabled cross wings at each end. The building has brick string courses and consists of seven bays. Most of the windows are 17th and 18th century two and four-light mullion and transom casements set in segmental-head openings, although there are three modern casements on the ground floor. To the left of the center, there is a pilastered doorcase with an entablature and a panelled door. A large rebuilt chimney stack is located on the right of the center block. The rainwater heads are dated 1672, likely marking the time of the brick facing. At the rear (north-east), there is a 17th century plastered timber frame wing that includes a three-light mullion window on the first floor.
Inside, the front range features a notable 17th century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters, square newels with arched panel sides, large ball finials, and a heavy moulded string and rail. The ceiling beams have ovolo moulded chamfers. Additionally, set into an internal wall at the rear of the front range are mutilated 17th century classical columns with Ionic capitals.
