Description
Brockdish Hall is an early 17th-century house constructed of brick and timber-frame. It features a steep black glazed pantile roof with gabled ends and has a brick chimney stack at each end. The building is two storeys tall with an attic and has octagonal brick corner shafts topped with pinnacles and ball finials. The front of the house appears to have been rebuilt in the early 19th century using buff-coloured brick and includes a parapet. It has three bays, with the centre bay slightly advanced, and is fitted with sashes that have glazing bars and sidelights. The central doorway features a rectangular fanlight and a pediment supported by console brackets.
At the rear, there is a wing that forms an L-shaped plan, which is plastered timber-frame and partly brick faced, also two storeys tall with an attic. This wing contains 17th-century five and six-light mullion/transom casements. A notable feature is the fine three-storeyed brick porch, which has a stepped gable and octagonal angle shafts with moulded brick pinnacles. The first and second floors of the porch have three-light moulded brick mullion/transom windows with leaded panes and brick pediments. There is a similar pediment above a round-headed doorway with plastered spandrels. The date 1634 is inscribed in the pediment. The porch also has a moulded doorcase with a segmental fanlight and a panelled door.
The rear wing was likely the centre of the original E-shaped plan, with the porch at the centre and the north wing having been demolished. Inside the front range, there is a late 18th-century pilastered fireplace adorned with swags and figure reliefs in the frieze. The rear wing features a ceiling beam with an ovolo moulded chamfer.
