Description
This barn, located approximately 90 metres southeast of Old Hall Farmhouse, dates from around 1800 and is constructed of red brick with a pantiled roof. It is designed as a three-stead threshing barn featuring a transept entrance on the east side. The exterior includes a high brick plinth, with the east and west elevations divided into five bays by large brick pilasters. The north and south returns consist of two similar bays. The hipped roof has ventilation slits arranged vertically in each bay, except for the central bays of the main elevations. The brickwork is laid in English bond, with a horizontal band made from smaller, older bricks that continues into the east transept, which also has a hipped roof and a carriage entrance beneath a segmental arch. Behind this entrance is a main wall with a semi-circular relieving arch. To the north of the transept, there is a mid-19th century lean-to outshut featuring one timber door and one boarded window. The west elevation has an opening for double timber doors topped by a semi-circular overlight, leading into a breeze block extension added in 1988-1989.
Inside, there is a pointed transept arch on the east side. The roof consists of seven tie beams, principals, two tiers of butt purlins, collars, and a ridge piece. The giant brick pilasters are also repeated on the interior walls, while the transept roof features tie beams, one tier of butt purlins, and collars. This barn forms part of a group with Old Hall Farmhouse, another barn approximately 60 metres southeast of Old Hall Farmhouse, the Church of St. Mary, and the remains of the Church of St. Martin.
