Description
The Elms is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century and 18th century, constructed of red brick. It features steeply pitched pantiled roofs, with black glazed tiles on the west side. The building is two storeys high with attics and has a main facade that consists of five bays arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, creating a symmetrical appearance. The outer bays are occupied by two-storey canted bays. The windows are sashes with glazing bars set under rubbed brick arches, and there is an eaves parapet with a brick dentil cornice and plain corner pilasters.
The central doorway has a six-panel door framed by a Doric doorcase with an open pediment and a semicircular fanlight that also features glazing bars. The roof includes three gabled dormers with decorative barge boards and crow-stepped gables on the north and south sides. An axial stack is located off-centre to the south, featuring linked shafts, while there is an external stack on the north gable. An attic casement window is present in the south gable, although lower openings have been blocked.
On the west side, opposite the stack, there is a two-and-a-half storey stair turret with a stepped gable. The turret has a blocked three-light attic window and below it are three and four-light mullion and transom windows. At the south-west corner, there are one and two-storey wings that are square with castellated parapets, featuring blocked openings, some of which have plain brick drip moulds, and sashes with glazing bars in the south wall. A catslide roof covers a lean-to at the north-west corner. Additionally, there is a one-and-a-half storey wing to the north with a stepped gable, two 20th-century flat-roofed dormers, and a square projection on the west side with a castellated parapet.
An attached castellated screen wall surrounds the garden at the north-east corner, and there is a red brick garden wall to the south, which features piers and saddleback coping.
