Description
Mariner's Inn is a public house that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the early 17th century and features 19th-century alterations and a north extension. The building is timber-framed with brick, all rendered and whitewashed, and has a gabled pantile roof. It has two storeys and an attic, with the west front facing the road. The entrance is now through a doorway in a long 19th-century one-storey range with a dormer attic that abuts to the north. The main block has two casements on each floor, which are of 20th-century origin, and displays exposed timber studs and a middle rail. There is an internal brick stack on the north side, while the south gable wall is made of late 19th-century brick. The rear features a full-length outshut under a catslide roof. The 19th-century wing is mostly constructed of clay lump on a plinth and also has a pantiled roof. To the right of the door, there are two late 20th-century garage doors under a sloping hood, along with various late 20th-century casements and four sloping dormers. Inside, the ground-floor bridging beams are plain chamfered, and the principal studs have jowled tops. One rough-cut upper cruck remains, and the roof consists of principals and two tiers of purlins, with the lower being butted and the upper clasped, along with 20th-century collars.
