Description

The Church of St Leonard in Billingford is primarily a late 14th century and early 15th century structure. It features decorated end Perpendicular windows in both the nave and chancel, along with a south porch. The west tower is truncated and supported by diagonal buttresses, topped with a pyramidal tiled roof and a polygonal stair turret. Inside, there is an arched brace nave roof with a crenellated wall plate and a tall tower arch. The chancel arch is double-chamfered, and there is an early 15th century screen with wide single-light divisions and ogee arches. The church also contains a 17th century octagonal pulpit, which is panelled and has a tripartite back-panel and tester adorned with pennants. Some 15th century bench ends feature fleurons in the border and poppy-heads. The font, dating from the 15th century, is octagonal and decorated with angels holding shields on the bowl and four lions on the stem. The south door displays fleurons on the battens, while the door to the tower stairs has a traceried head. There are wall paintings, likely from the early 14th century, located high on the south wall, and fragments of old glass can be found in the chancel windows. The church is constructed of flint rubble, partly rendered, with stone dressings and tiled roofs.
