Description
Nos. 14 and 16 on St. Benedict's Street are a pair of shops dating from the 19th century. No. 14 features a 17th century rear addition and a 16th century cellar. The building is made of red brick with a pantile roof; the two-storey rear extension has a rendered, timber-framed first floor and a pantiled lean-to roof. The main facade is three storeys high and consists of five bays, with 20th century shop fronts. It includes sash windows that have rusticated surrounds and a vermiculated key stone, topped by a dentil cornice. The cellar beneath No. 14 contains two four-centred side chambers, with the eastern chamber broken at the apex. There is a deep wall arch in the west wall, and another four-centred side chamber with an adjoining entry in the south wall, both of which are blocked. All the vaults are made of brick, and the joisted ceiling was replaced in the 20th century. The building is listed due to the cellar beneath No. 14, which is part of an important collection of 15th and 16th century cellars within the city walls.
