Description

This is a former public house, now a shop, dating to the late 18th century. It incorporates remains of a 15th-century undercroft. The building is constructed of red brick with white brick dressings, particularly noticeable on the carriage arch. It is three storeys high and has three bays, with a carriage entry beneath a three-centred arch on the right-hand side. A later shop front now provides the main entry. The upper floors feature sash windows with flat, rubbed brick arches above. Decorative paired cornice brackets are present.

Beneath the entire building lies a brick undercroft, which was partially destroyed during the 18th-century rebuilding. At the rear, on the east side, is a side chamber with a pointed barrel-vault profile, opposite which are the remains of a corner vaulting pier. An arch on the front wall could represent wall arcading or the remains of another side chamber that once extended underneath the street.

The building’s significance derives from the undercroft, which forms an important part of a group of structures within the city walls.
