Description
Mousehold House is a large building that has been converted into flats and a shop. It dates from the 18th century, with additions made by William Mear in 1820 and a remodel in 1969. The structure features a red brick exterior and a hipped slate roof. The main facade has two storeys and five symmetrical first-floor windows. The entrance is marked by half-glazed double doors flanked by side windows, pilasters, and a large segmental-headed overlight with glazing bars, all set within a moulded architrave. Two plain Tuscan pilasters and four Tuscan columns support a prominent pedimented portico, which has an iron lamp hanging inside. Above the door, there is a three-light window. The windows throughout the building are sash style with glazing bars, set under slightly cambered gauged brick arches. A modillion cornice runs along the top of the facade. Between the central columns, there is a small pedestal that once held an urn, now broken.
The garden front to the right features three storeys with centre and end pilasters from the 18th century. The tall ground-floor casements have louvred shutters, and the first-floor windows have aprons and a yellow brick stringcourse. The early 19th-century bow-fronted wings on either side each have two curved sashes, with the right wing retaining its glazing bars. The left wing has a reset tablet that reads: Lt.Colonel/Six R. Harvey/1821. Although the interior was not examined during the re-survey, it is noted to have panelling and moulded ceilings. The house is now situated within a 20th-century development of maisonettes built in its grounds.
