Description
Doughty's Hospital is a Grade II listed sheltered housing building, originally established in 1687, with a commemorative stone marking its date. It was rebuilt around 1869 using the sparse remains of 17th-century ground floor walls. The structure is made of red brick and features pantile roofs, arranged in three connecting ranges around a courtyard. The building is two storeys high and includes a cast-iron balcony on the first floor. There are 13 first-floor windows on each of the flanking sides and 8 on the end range. Each side contains four flats per floor, all with round-headed doors and 2-light casements that have rusticated brick surrounds. The balcony has a continuous-pitch roof, and the building is adorned with 19th-century 'Tudor' chimneys and crow-stepped end gables. Notably, the inner balusters and newel posts from a 17th-century staircase have been reused in the north-west corner.
