Description
Holkham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Aberdeen granite and bronze and is situated on a small mound within a grassed area on the Holkham Hall estate, near other Grade II-listed buildings including The Infants School, The School, and Nos 25 and 26 Park Road.
The memorial features a tall, polished Aberdeen granite obelisk with a Greek Key design carved in relief around its base. Bronze wreaths are attached to each face of the obelisk, positioned above the decorative band. The obelisk stands on a four-sided plinth made of rough-hewn granite, which is set atop a three-stepped, square base. Inscriptions and names are displayed on bronze panels affixed to the plinth and the upper step of the base.
The main inscription is located on the bronze panel on the west face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND TO THE IMMORTAL MEMORY OF/ ALL THOSE FROM/ HOLKHAM/ WHO SERVED IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1919/ SOME FELL IN BATTLE/ AND SOME DIED OF WOUNDS AND SICKNESS/ BUT ALL NOBLY DID THEIR DUTY/ TO THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ THIS OBELISK WAS ERECTED BY/ THOMAS WILLIAM, 3RD EARL OF LEICESTER." The names of 19 individuals who served in the First World War are listed on bronze plaques on the remaining three sides of the plinth, along with details of their regiments, how they died, and the dates.
Additionally, a bronze plaque on the west face of the upper step of the base commemorates the Second World War with the words "WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945." The names of the two casualties from this conflict are inscribed on separate bronze plaques on the north and south faces of the upper step, following a similar style to the First World War names.
