Description
The Ancient House is a house that underwent 19th-century remodelling of an early 17th-century building. It is constructed of flint and red brick and features a steeply pitched pantile roof with a crested ridge. The house has two storeys, with a one-storey wing to the south and crow-stepped gables. Notably, there is an early 17th-century two-storey porch with a gable topped with a decorative feature, a three-light ovolo-mullioned window, and a moulded and chamfered door frame. Brick rectangular hood moulds are present over the openings. The building has five chimney stacks, each with paired terra-cotta moulded shafts, bases, and castellated caps. There are two three- and four-light mullion and transom windows, mostly dating from the 19th century, with pediments over some first-floor windows. The north gable shows evidence of earlier brick and flint work, featuring two two-light windows with drip moulds, one of which is blocked. The eastern flank wall is made of flint and brick, topped with pantile capping.
