Description

The Melton Constable War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected in 1922, with an addition for the Second World War. It was designed by Mr. W Marriott, who was the Engineer and Traffic Manager of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Company, and it was manufactured at the railway works in Melton Constable.

Constructed from cast concrete blocks, the memorial is located outside the former village school, which dates to 1896, on the north side of Briston Road. It features a neoclassical-style cenotaph, consisting of a tall, square-sectioned concrete pillar. This pillar is supported on each side by buttress piers that are topped with ornamental scrolled consoles. At the top, it has a moulded entablature with a frieze inscribed with the date '1914 - 1918'. A carved laurel wreath that once rested on the blocking course above the frieze has been lost. On the south face, there is a bronze plaque that reads: 'TO OUR / GLORIOUS DEAD / [Names] / THEIR NAME FOR / EVER LIVETH'. The entire structure stands on a three-stepped base that is curved at the front.

The boundary walls and railings of the former school that enclose the memorial on its east, west, and south sides are not considered of special interest and are therefore excluded from the listing.
