Description
The East and West Runton War Memorial is a First World War memorial, unveiled in 1921, with a later addition for the Second World War. It is constructed of flint with ashlar dressings and is prominently located alongside the main road through the village of West Runton, next to the boundary wall of the churchyard.
Three steps lead up to the memorial, which features an angled or canted wall made of cut and squared flints laid in regular courses with ashlar dressings. The memorial has a moulded cornice and a frieze inscribed with the painted lettering:
"THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY."
There are three panels on the front of the memorial. The outer panels list the names of those who fell in the First World War, while the central panel reads:
"TO THE MEN OF/ RUNTON/ WHO FELL / (NAMES)/ 1939-1945."
