Description
Thornage Water Mill is a late 18th and early 19th century water mill situated over the River Glaven. Now derelict, it is constructed of red brick with a pantiled roof. The north front has three storeys and an attic, featuring three windows to the second and third floors, originally casements, set within segmental arches. The gables are topped with tiled coping, and there is a dentil eaves cornice. The western gable has a loading door on each floor, with projecting beams that once supported a platform. Remains of a hoist are visible above the third-floor door. The interior contains intact machinery located at the east end, including an undershot water wheel complete with paddles, a pit wheel driving a wallower and spur wheel connected to three sets of stones, a crown wheel driving a lay shaft via a pinion wheel, and a screening machine on the first floor.
