Description
The Overstrand War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Clipsham stone and is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Martin on Cromer Road in Overstrand, Norfolk. The memorial stands prominently on the south side of the churchyard, near one of the entrances.
It features a 5-meter tall wheel-head cross that is pierced and cusped, set atop a slender octagonal shaft with a moulded collar and foot. This shaft is mounted on a pentagonal plinth and a three-stepped base. The inscription, carved in relief, reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO KEEP IN REMEMBRANCE THE MEN OF OVERSTRAND WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919. GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. (NAMES) 1939 – 1945. (NAMES)."
