Description
The barn at Breck Farm, built in the second half of the 18th century, is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with a flint plinth on the right side. It features a pantile roof and gable parapets. The structure consists of six bays and has two large openings, with the doors on the left side having been renewed. There are ventilation slits and a dentil cornice. The gables are made of tumbled brick and display the letters E A, representing Edward Astley, who lived from 1760 to 1802, in iron. The left gable has a blocked window and a weather vane. At the rear, there is a continuous outshut made of uncoursed flint and brick mosaic. The barn has two main doorways, and the interior walls are also finished in coursed flint and brick mosaic, with brick above the eaves level of the left gable. Brick pilasters flank the doorways. The roof has been renewed with a three-tier staggered purlin system, featuring two collars, braces to the tie beams, and queen struts. The outshut roof includes three rows of staggered purlins. Many of the roof members in the outshut and a moulded bressumer above the right-hand rear doorway are likely reused materials. The barn is included for its group value.
