Description
The tunnel at Letheringsett Hall, located under the A148 road approximately 50 meters south-southwest of the Church of St. Andrew, was constructed around 1805. This structure provides direct access from Letheringsett Hall to a water supply at a reservoir situated to the south of the road.
The north entrance features dark broken flints and an embattled brick parapet, with a rendered arch that has wave-moulded jambs and round shafts. The moulded arch includes an outer order of brick and a stone hood mould. The keystone displays a classical bearded mask, with a triangular niche positioned above it. The tunnel walls are adorned with rusticated bands of dark broken flint, while the rear of the arches is rendered. The vault is made of brick, with rendered semi-circular arches and rusticated rendered brick jambs at both ends of the level section beneath the road.
The south entrance is characterized by a 4-centred stone arch featuring a cherub keystone and continuous hollow chamfered moulding. It is flanked by bastions with oeillets, and there are four pointed brick niches on the right revetment and three buttresses on the left revetment.
