Description
The Black Lion Hotel is a building that dates back to the 15th century and has undergone later alterations. The front consists of two blocks, likely from the 17th century, made of stuccoed brick and flint, topped with black-glazed pantile roofs featuring gabled ends. The right-hand end has a higher roof and is two storeys tall, with two windows plus four more windows. The windows are sashes, with the right-hand end featuring glazing bars and a carriageway. The left-hand end has two mid-19th century doorways, one adorned with a pediment and the other with a cornice supported by console brackets.
Inside, there are chamfered and moulded ceiling beams, along with panelling in the north end. To the south-west, there is a long wing dating from the late 17th century, constructed of painted brick and also featuring a pantile roof with gabled ends. This wing is two storeys high with an attic and includes three prominent pedimented dormers with moulded cornices and casements, one of which has leaded panes. It also has a string course and sashes with thick glazing bars. The interior of this wing also showcases chamfered ceiling beams, and there is a plastered gable in the angle at the rear.
To the north-west is a section from the 15th century, where only the east end of the original long range remains. This part is made of flint with a pantile roof and features the remains of a 15th-century two-light cusped stone window on the first floor, along with a lancet window in the east gable.
