Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed parish church located on Church Street in Stiffkey. The church features a largely Perpendicular style, although the tower and charnel are earlier structures. It includes a west tower, a north porch, a nave, and a chancel. The nave, which has four bays, showcases a flushwork parapet that incorporates the earlier west tower. The north porch, dating from the early 15th century, is adorned with armorial shields in octofoils and has a gable featuring brick and flint chequer work, with the springing of the groins visible inside. The chancel dates from the late 13th or early 14th century and contains a rood stair on the south side of the nave. The nave roof is arched braced, while the chancel roof and east window tracery were added in 1848. There is a 13th-century piscina, 19th-century benches, and stalls from around 1920, along with a Holy Table and reredos. Two medieval stalls with misericords are also present, and there is a wall monument to Nathaniel Bacon, which predates 1615 and is possibly by Maximilian Colt.
