Description
The remains of St Mary's Priory, originally known as The Abbey, are located on the east side of High Street in Little Walsingham. This site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and consists of the remnants of an Augustinian Priory founded around 1150, which became a significant pilgrimage center.
The most notable feature is the 15th-century gabled east wall of the church, which includes a large window, although the tracery is missing. There are also two octagonal turrets with buttresses that display flushwork and niches. The late 13th-century remains of the refectory are represented by the south and west walls, with the west wall featuring a large four-light traceried window.
To the east of the refectory lies the early 14th-century dormitory undercroft, which has two aisles of three bays, rib vaulted, supported by octagonal piers and semi-circular wall shafts. The remaining structures of the Priory are incorporated into the Abbey house. Additionally, there is a Norman doorway located east of the Priory church that has been re-erected and imported from another location; this is one of the few remnants from before the 13th century.
