Description

Crossways is a cottage dating from the 16th century, which was enlarged in the 17th century and had its eaves raised in the 19th century. It is constructed of flint and brick, topped with a pan-tile roof. Originally designed with a 2-cell plan, it was expanded to a 3-cell layout in the 17th century. The facade features three bays and is two storeys high. The central door has a small blocked light beside it, with the central mullion still intact. To the left, there is a 19th-century casement window set in a segmental arched opening, along with a small blocked light with a hood mould to its left. The right side has quoins leading to a third bay, featuring a 19th-century casement under a segmental arch and a small blocked light with a hood mould to its right. The first floor has three 19th-century casements. A brick dentil eaves cornice runs along the top, and there are gable end stacks. The right-hand gable has two attic lights with hood moulds and decorative diapering between them. At the rear, there is a doorway that has been blocked, located opposite the entrance door. Inside, the left-hand ground floor room has beams with heavy chamfers, a transverse beam with run-out stops, and a bressumer beam with a barred stop. The right-hand ground floor room features a slightly cambered bressumer beam with a bevelled ogee and a nicked stop.
