Description

15A King Street is a house that now serves as an art gallery and associated workshop. It has early 16th-century origins but was reworked in the early 18th century. The building is constructed of brick with a coursed limestone facade, featuring two storeys and a dormer attic divided into three bays. The entrance is located in a rear courtyard, which is shared with No. 15 and accessed from the carriageway of No. 15.

The front of the building has three flush-frame sash windows on each floor, complete with glazing bars. It features an overhanging plain timber eaves cornice topped with a lead flat. The gabled roof is covered with 19th-century plain tiles and includes one gabled dormer with a sash window. There is a shared north stack with No. 15. The first floor of the north courtyard elevation has a thin Venetian window with glazing bars.

Inside, the most notable feature is a large staircase hall that is illuminated by the Venetian window. The remarkable open-well cantilevered staircase has an open string, with the strings intricately carved with sea-dragons. Each tread has two turned balusters with tapering fluted spindles, and the newels are circular in section, reeded and fluted. The handrail is ramped and wreathed, matching the dado rail. On the first floor, the balustrade returns to form a south gallery that provides a close view of a fine plaster chandelier rose, designed with deeply undercut floral swathes and a tight floral boss. Floral coving encircles the room.

The ground-floor east room, which faces the street, features plaster coving adorned with floral motifs at intervals and an eccentric bridging beam similarly plastered. It includes two panelled doors and a chimneypiece with tapering pilasters and three deep recesses in the frieze, with minimal plaster decoration. The room above has large-frame panelling.
