Description

Abbey Cottage is a cottage that likely dates back to the 15th century with a 19th-century extension. The east gable features a notable plinth made of chequered flushwork, with squared clunch blocks and squared knapped flint, along with rubble and knapped flint above. The main structure is built of flint rubble, with a brick extension on the west side. It has a red pantiled roof and consists of two storeys with three windows. The east gable has a large window embrasure with stone jambs and a pointed arch head in brick from the 18th and 19th centuries, which is currently blocked with knapped flint. The cottage has stone quoins and three ground floor windows, including one 19th-century cast-iron three-light casement from the Holkham Estate, as well as three first floor windows, two of which are 19th-century cast-iron two-light casements. The roof is low pitched, featuring one ridge and one stack at the west end. The gable may be that of a 15th-century chapel, as indicated by 18th-century maps that reference Almoner's Garden or Chapel Close.
