Description
No 15 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It dates back to the early 16th century but underwent significant rebuilding in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with further alterations in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from stone and brick, featuring a painted brick front and a pantile roof with gable end stacks. It has two storeys and a two-window range, which includes 2/2 sash windows above a canted bay on the left, a part-glazed door with an overlight and hood, and another 2/2 sash window on the right. The rear has various casements and an extension.
Inside, both floors showcase a fine set of roll-moulded beams and joists, complete with cornices on the north and south walls. The tie beams are cranked to the first floor, and this timbering appears to be original. On the ground floor, there is a small open fireplace that may incorporate the herringbone back of an earlier, larger fireplace, using 16th-century bricks. The roof, added in the late 18th century, features collar trusses. The early 16th-century ceilings are a notable survival in the building.
