Description
The War Memorial, located adjacent to the Church of St Mark in Hilgay, was constructed around 1920. It is made of carved granite, with some surfaces left rough-hewn. The memorial features a rough-hewn base that stands on a square pedestal, topped by a tall cross with linked arms. A sword is carved in relief on the face of the cross shaft. The memorial includes an inscription honoring those who fell in the First World War, with their names listed below. The square base also bears the names of those who fell in the Second World War. Additionally, on the north side, there is a unique panel inscribed with the names of a villager who died in the Korean War in 1952 and another who lost their life in the Malaysian conflict. This finely detailed War Memorial is an important feature in the rural landscape, complementing the adjacent Church of St Mark.
