Description
Burkitt Homes is a group of 12 almshouses built in 1909 for and endowed by William Burkitt in memory of his uncle. The buildings are constructed of red brick with machine tile roofs and are arranged in a quadrangle plan. The entrance facade facing the street is symmetrical, featuring a two-storey central gatehouse flanked by single-storey wings that extend three bays to the right and left. The gatehouse is accessed through a four-centred arch and is adorned with polygonal angle turrets and two additional polygonal engaged turrets on either side of the arch. The facade includes mullioned windows and a crenellated design. The side wings also have mullioned windows, gabled roofs, and two ridge stacks each. Crenellated screen walls extend to the right and left, incorporating pedestrian entrances. A commemorative plaque detailing the history of the almshouses is located under the entrance arch. The east range of the court features a twin-gabled center illuminated by two four-light mullioned windows, with entrance doors to each house sheltered by heavy moulded timber hoods.
