Description
The Town Hall, built in 1895 by Tree & Price from London, is located on Queen Street in King's Lynn. Constructed from stone and flint, it features a slate roof with a cupola at the ridge and showcases a blend of Elizabethan and Gothic Revival architectural styles. The building is two storeys high and heavily chequered to resemble the nearby Guildhall.
The elevation is divided horizontally into distinct sections: a plinth course, a row of three-light double-transomed windows, a chequerwork band, and another row of three-light double-transomed windows. The lower two sections are interrupted on the south side by an arched and ogeed porch entrance. Above this, the upper two sections include a central canted oriel. The tall gable on the north side contains a nine-light panel-tracery perpendicular window set under an ogeed round arch. Stepped buttresses rise between each of the nine bays, extending to the chequerworked parapet, with two buttresses cutting through the large Perpendicular window.
Inside, the Town Hall has a grand but unadventurous design. The entrance passage leads to a staircase hall lined with small-framed panelling. It features a closed string staircase with splat balusters and square newels. Various rooms on the first floor are panelled for official use, including a courtroom that retains its complete fittings from 1895.
