Description
Two houses at 16 and 18 King Street, King’s Lynn, were originally built in the late 16th century and feature an early 19th-century facade, with alterations in the 20th century. They are timber-framed with a brick exterior and have a slate roof, with pantiles to the rear. The buildings are three storeys high with a dormer attic. Each house has two bays. A central passageway runs to the rear, covered by a 19th-century timber arch. Number 18 has a 19th-century shopfront, divided into three parts, accessed from the passageway, with two horned plate-glass sashes on each floor above, set within gauged skewback arches. Number 16 also has two sashes to each floor, similarly set within gauged skewback arches; the upper floor sashes have glazing bars. A timber eaves cornice, decorated with dentils, sits below a gabled roof. There are two 20th-century gabled dormers and two solar panels on number 16. Internal gable-end stacks are present. The north side of the central passageway shows timber studwork. A rear wing of number 16 retains some original timber-frame elements, although it is largely 17th-century colourwashed brick with sash windows in reduced openings. The ground floor of number 18 was completely modernised in the late 20th century. The upper floors of both buildings were not inspected, although the interior of number 16 is potentially of interest.
