Description
Barton Bendish War Memorial stands in the churchyard of St Andrew’s Church, located on Church Road in Barton Bendish. It is a prominent feature, positioned by the churchyard wall and easily visible from the road, with a lowered section of the wall and added railings providing access. The memorial is constructed from rough-hewn grey granite and takes the form of a wheel-head cross with a Sword of Sacrifice, set upon a plinth with a two-stepped base. The lower section of the shaft has a smooth face and bears the First World War dedication. A similar smooth face to the front of the plinth displays the First World War names. A Second World War inscription has been added to the upper step of the base, and a recent plaque at the foot of the memorial lists additional First World War names. The inscription on the shaft reads "GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ SACRED/ TO THE MEMORY/ OF THE/ GALLANT FALLEN/ FROM THIS PARISH/ THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE." The inscription on the plinth reads "(NAMES)," as does the inscription on the upper step referencing 1939 – 1945 and the plaque at the foot of the memorial, which also includes the words: “THIS MEMORIAL WAS RESTORED/ IN COMMEMORATION OF THE/ SILVER JUBILEE OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II/ 1977.”
