Description

The Church of St Andrew is a parish church that dates back to the early 12th century but was entirely rebuilt between 1838 and 1839 by John Brown. It features a rendered brick exterior and a slate roof, with a nave and an apsidal chancel designed in a Neo-Norman style. The west front is notable for its giant corner pilasters and a west door that is adorned with two orders of shafts beneath a zig-zag arch. Above this door is a two-light west window set under a string course, which is further enhanced by a dog-tooth super-arch and flanked by two similarly decorated blind arches. At the ridge of the gable, there is a bell-cote.

The south nave consists of three bays that are divided by pilasters, with each bay containing a round lancet window flanked by one blind lancet on either side. The blind lancets feature necks that are pinched by prominent imposts on nook-shafts, and the arches are moulded with a billet design. A corbel table at the eaves showcases grotesque heads. The apse mirrors this design but lacks the decorative blind lights on the windows, instead featuring roll moulding in place of the billet. The north nave is similar but has one simple round-headed narrow lancet in each bay.

An apsidal vestry was added to the north chancel in 1858, which includes a timber parapet and a conical lead roof. Inside, the early 12th-century chancel arch features two orders of shafts on drum bases with cushion capitals that are just beginning to show scalloping. The square imposts support an arch that has been completely renewed and is decorated with chevron and billet patterns.
