Description

This barn, built in 1754, is located 50 metres north-west of Barmer Farmhouse. It is constructed of English bond red brick and features a red pantiled roof. The structure is a three-stead threshing barn with a west-facing catslide. There is a cart entrance on the east side, while the south gable includes two ground-level, two first-floor, and one attic honeycomb brick ventilation windows, all set under cambered brick arches. The ground floor has a brick plinth, and there are platbands on the first floor and gable. The gable is tumbled and features a stone plaque dated 1754, with some black brick headers present.

The east side has a catslide cart entrance with tumbled parapets, and on both the north and south sides, there are two ground-level and two first-floor honeycomb windows, which are partly obscured by later additions. The barn also has a four-course brick moulded eaves cornice. The west side features a central entrance covered by a catslide roof and two outshut additions made of brick and flint. The north gable has five honeycomb brick windows, along with an apex weather vane and a cock. Additions on the north-east and south-east sides are not of special interest.

Inside, the barn has a five-bay roof with main ties resting on wall posts supported by struts. It includes three ranks of butt purlins and two collars, but no ridge. The details and date plaque indicate that this barn is the work of Robert Glover, who also worked on Barwick House and Ivy Farm Barn in Stanhoe.
