Description

The ruins of the Chapel of St. Andrew, dating from the 12th century, are located approximately 80 meters north of the Church of St. Mary in East Walton. The remains consist of chalk and carstone rubble, flint, and limestone dressings, and the structure is roofless, with only the west gable and the north and south walls still standing. The west gable is primarily made of flint and features large iron conglomerate blocks at the base, with the north quoins and jambs of a central semi-circular headed doorway. Above this doorway is a rectangular opening, with jambs that extend to the apex.

The south wall contains a blocked two-bay arcade supported by octagonal piers that are about 1.5 meters high. There is a doorway in the western bay and a two-light window opening in the eastern bay, which likely dates to the 13th century and has hollow chamfered mouldings. Putlog holes can be seen in the interior walls, approximately 2.2 meters above the ground. Inside the west doorway, there is the base of a cross shaft, which is square with stop angles and has an octagonal socket for the shaft.

This chapel was associated with the Augustinian Priory at West Acre, which was founded around 1135 and is located about 4 kilometers to the east-southeast. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in Norfolk.
