Description

Smithy Range at Waterden Farm, located to the south of the main farmstead, is a building dated 1871, constructed for the Holkham Estate. It features a flint exterior with brick lacing and a pantile roof, topped by a single chimney stack for the smithy. The structure has an L-shaped plan, with the smithy positioned at the west end of the south-facing range, and a workshop that extends northwards with attached cart sheds facing east. The smithy includes a small-paned cast-iron window and a planked split door, while the adjacent workshop has a single cast-iron window. The cart shed and workshop comprise six bays and feature a double doorway. Inside, the smithy retains its hearth, bellows, and workbench with lifting gear. This smithy is a rare example that still holds its original fittings, reflecting the changes in farming practices during the 1870s when increased mechanisation required machinery to be repaired and stored indoors.
