Description

Holme-next-the-Sea War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, situated on a raised bank in the churchyard, next to the entrance gates and south of the Grade I-listed Church of St Mary.

The memorial features a stone, Latin cross fleurée with a tall shaft and a moulded foot. The east face of the cross-head has the dates 1914 – 1918 incised across the horizontal arms, while the west face displays the dates 1939 – 1945. An inverted sword is carved in relief on the east face of the shaft. This rises from a four-sided, tapering plinth that sits on a two-stepped, chamfered base. The entire structure is placed on a concrete block, which has steps on the east side leading up from the churchyard path to the memorial. The concrete base includes four floral tribute holders at each corner.

The plinth features inscriptions and names, including regimental details, in incised lettering that is painted black. On the north face of the plinth, the inscription reads: THIS MEMORIAL/ WAS ERECTED/ BY THE PARISHIONERS./ IN MEMORY OF/ OUR GALLANT MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WARS. The east face includes the words (6 NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. Just below, on the upper step of the base, are the words HOLME WAR MEMORIAL. The south face of the plinth also lists (6 NAMES)/ THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR A RIGHTEOUS CAUSE.

The names of the four men who died in the Second World War are inscribed on the west face of the plinth.
